Have you been avoiding going to your Wailuku, Maui dentist because you’re afraid you might need a tooth extracted? While that is certainly sometimes a necessity, there are other options available today that allow you to avoid that pain and hassle. Dental crowns are a form of restorative dentistry that facilitates saving even a damaged or decayed tooth.

What Is It?

A crown, alternatively called a cap, is essentially a cover for your damaged, decayed, or broken tooth. This procedure provides protection to the weakened tooth, and also covers up any discoloration or other visually unattractive aspects of the tooth. Why would you need a dental crown? One good example is if your tooth needs an especially large filling and thus requires extra structural support afterward.

The Procedure

The preparatory work involves altering the tooth’s size so that the crown will fit. Our skilled team then takes an impression of the teeth and gums in that area so that the cap will fit exactly into the space. You will be given a temporary cover over the tooth so that you can have normal mouth function while you wait for your finished dental crown. Once it’s ready, your temporary cap will be removed and the permanent one (typically made of durable porcelain) cemented in.

The Importance of Prompt Treatment

No one wants to have to undergo restorative dentistry, however delaying treatment only increases the risk of needing even more dental work. Even worse, if you wait too long, you could lose the tooth altogether. Consult the expert staff at our friendly Wailuku, Maui dentist office as soon as you suspect a problem.
