Inlays and Onlays: A Better Filling Alternative

March 15, 2017 - 2 minutes read

If you grew up before the 1990s, you may very well have a mouth full of metallic (also known as amalgam) fillings. Over the years, concerns regarding the use of mercury in these fillings have led to the development of better options. Your Wailuku dentist at Miyamoto Dental Design Suite can talk to you about the best filling choices for you, including inlays and onlays.

Advanced Filling Material

Inlays and onlays are restorative dentistry treatments designed to fit into the cusps of your teeth. These cusps are typically the result of cavity removal or other tooth damage. These fillings are usually made out of medical grade porcelain, but may also be crafted of a composite resin. They are made to match your natural tooth color and created specifically for the shape of your cusps.

While inlays are made to fit inside the crevices themselves, onlays fill these cusps as well as spread across the entire surface of the tooth.

Am I a Candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

If you have – or are a candidate for – traditional fillings, then inlays and onlays are likely an appropriate treatment for you. In addition, you must have enough existing tooth structure to support the added material. These types of fillings are often used to replace old metallic fillings as well.

If there is inadequate remaining tooth structure, or your natural tooth is not strong enough to support inlays and onlays, dental crowns may be used instead.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

The materials used in this procedure are very durable. The fillings may last as long as 30 years. In addition, inlays and onlays can actually extend the life of your teeth by adding strength to them, potentially reducing the need for future repairs.
