A Quick Look at Dentures

March 28, 2017 - 2 minutes read

Dentures are one of the most common types of restorative dentistry, particularly in older adults. Time, decay, and damage can wreak havoc on your mouth, resulting in one more missing teeth. This situation affects your ability to eat properly, as well as the self-confidence you get from a beautiful smile. An oral appliance equipped with replacement teeth can help you feel whole again.

Types of Dentures

As with most dental procedures, the best choice for you will depend upon your individual case. Your Wailuku dentist will make sure you get the appropriate treatment.

Full Dentures: This is what you get when you opt to have all of your remaining teeth extracted. Your mouth is given time to heal before being fitted for your oral appliance. Alternatively, with same-day dentures, you will be fitted as soon as your teeth are removed, and then come back to have your appliance adjusted once you heal.

Partials: This option requires that at least one healthy tooth remains in place on the top or bottom. Partials, or bridges, contain one or more teeth attached to a plate which “bridges” across your mouth, filling in the gaps.

Overdentures: If possible, this is a great option because it allows you to save some of the remaining teeth in order for them provide jaw structure and support. The teeth are prepped in order for the dentures to fit over them.

Afterwards

Some people experience some level of discomfort as they adjust to their new dentures. Over the first few weeks, however, any soreness should fade. If it doesn’t, contact your Wailuku dentist for an adjustment.
