The most significant esthetic issue that our patients wish to overcome is not what many might anticipate or expect. Is it misaligned or crooked teeth? Perhaps it is small chips or cracks? Actually, Michael Miyamoto, DDS at Miyamoto Dental Design Suite Inc. in Wailuku, HI most often discusses the issue of teeth whitening with our patients. As a cosmetic dentist office, we focus on many issues, yet whiter teeth is a great concern for many.
Fortunately, we have several methods for teeth whitening, and we may do a treatment even before we do restorations. After all, if we see a patient in our dental office, and do the restorations or general treatment before any whitening, we may not give them the brightest smile. Dental veneers, bonding and dental crowns are all colored to match your smile, and so will first offer you options for the cosmetic dentistry treatment and then begin the restorative work.
Fortunately, the methods for teeth whitening we have available are fast and simple, and can work for almost any patient.
We see many people who have a variety of stains or discolorations. Whitening can work for most, including those who have discoloration due to:
- Lifestyle choices such as smoking or drinking staining beverages like coffee, tea or wine.
- Fluorosis (exposure to high amounts of fluoride early in life – usually in drinking water)
- Medication use (most commonly tetracycline)
- Age, which can yellow or brown the teeth
- Excessive wear to the enamel
We make two potent systems for whitening available, including Nite White and KöR. Before we provide you with the right solution for your needs, we review your oral health, your history, and your lifestyle. This is the only way we can best address your needs, and if your discoloration is due to medications or fluorosis, meaning that it is “intrinsic” staining deeper in the enamel, we are likely to suggest the stronger KöR approach.
How Whitening Is Done
Fortunately, teeth whitening is not a complicated matter. You will visit our office to have special molds made of your upper and lower teeth. These will be sent to a lab in order for well-fitting trays to be made. When they return from the lab, you come for a second visit to our dentist office, and we show you how to fill them with the compounds used for teeth whitening. You take everything home and use your system once or twice each day, or overnight, for a few weeks. You will see great changes in coloration, and within just two weeks, you should be ready to get restorations that are much whiter than they would have been without the treatment.
