Treatment Options for TMJ Dysfunction

The TMJ (temporomandibular joints) are part of a complex, interdependent network of muscles, ligaments, and bone which allow your jaw to function properly. When one or more of the mechanisms or components in this system goes awry, you may experience TMD – temporomandibular disorder. If you’re looking for TMJ treatment in Wailuku, there are a number of options available, including non-surgical.

Symptoms of TMD

Not sure if you have a TMJ problem? Some symptoms can mimic other health issues, however there are usually telltale signs with TMD, such as:

  • Head and/or neck aches
  • Jaw pain upon opening and closing
  • Restriction when opening or closing the jaw
  • Grinding, popping, or clicking when moving jaw
  • Ear ache or ringing in ears
  • Jaw misalignment (moves to one side when opening or closing)
  • Nocturnal bruxism (night grinding; can be tricky as it can be a symptom or a cause)

It is very easy to mistake many of these symptoms for other disorders. That’s why it is important to look at the whole picture of your symptoms to see if, together, they indicate TMD.

TMJ Treatment

Solutions for temporomandibular disorders vary according to the cause. This issue could be the result of a bad or misaligned bite, an injury, or simply chronic stress.

The most common way we begin treatment for this condition is with a custom-made bite splint. This oral appliance adjusts the jaw position into its proper physiologic position. Ideally this should provide relief after a period of wearing the orthotic every day, for 23 hours per day.

Other therapies we may recommend include relaxation techniques, braces, or restorative dental treatments. Each patient is different and we work with you to create a customized treatment course.
